The "Best Little Warehouse in Spencer"
The dream of a permanent home for Spencer Community
Theatre became a reality in June, 1982 when the former
Spencer Grocer Building was purchased to house the
theatre's auditorium and support facilities. While
looking for period beer advertising signs to be used
for props in "Damn Yankees", Tom Johnson came to the
warehouse and discovered an empty eyesore of a
building just waiting to be transformed. SCT
had found a home by August 1, 1982. During that
summer, with the help of the community, the "Best
Little Grocer Warehouse in Spencer" became the "Best
Little Theatre Warehouse in Spencer." By November that
year, a major renovation had been finished and "My Fair
Lady" opened the building. Over the years, SCT has
continued to grow and expand its operation and its
programming, and is able to house under one roof:
properties, flats, platforms, a workshop, lobby,
box office, business offices, green room, concession
stand and 266 seat auditorium. SCT's Costume Shop was
also able to find a permanent home on the second floor,
housing over 30,000 costumes and properties. SCT's many
improvements over the years have come to fruition due to
the generous gifts of individuals, families, organizations,
businesses, and corporations. The support given SCT in the
past, currently, and in the future is just another example
of how area residents are aware of "the big picture."
They understand the value of promoting and supporting the
arts. Support of the arts enhances and enriches the
quality of life in Northwest Iowa.
