Four young people (Hermia, Helena, Lysander, Demetrius), all of whom are pining after one of the others in the group, all end up in the forest together on a midsummer night. Through some intervening of well-intentioned fairies and the not-so-well-intentioned Oberon and Titania, the four young lovers wind up in a whirlwind of changing minds, broken hearts, giddy triumphs, and finally- love restored. Through all of this, Oberon and Titania battle it out and use the other fairies, as well as some amateur thespians, to suit their own purposes. As in many of Shakespeare’s comedies, all ends well and happily, and Puck, in a tender epilogue, reminds the audience that it may have been all a dream.
