Children Theatre

Spencer Community Theatre is proud to announce that musicals “Footloose” and Disney’s “Aristocats” will be produced as part of this summer’s Children’s Theatre Season.

Children ages 6-14 are eligible to audition for and participate in “AristoCats,” Disney’s comedic animal tale based on the Disney film of the same name.  The story begins when Madame’s jealous butler Edgar cat-naps Duchess and her Aristokittens and abandons them in the Parisian countryside.  Fortunately, Thomas O’Malley and his rag-tag bunch of Alley Cats come to their rescue!  “AristoCats” features simple, jazzy tunes that introduce kids to a “French style” of music with such favorites as “Ev’rybody Wants to be a Cat” and “The Aristocats.”

Auditions for “AristoCats” will take place on Monday, June 9 and Tuesday, June 10 at 6 p.m.  Rehearsals begin June 16 and run four weeks, culminating in performances on July 10, 11, 12, and 13.  The amount of rehearsal time varies and is largely dependant on the size of role in which the child is cast.

Area teens ages 14 and up are encouraged to audition for the teen production of  “Footloose."  When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. He isn't prepared, however, for the rigorous local laws, including a ban on dancing. The ban comes from a preacher determined to exercise the control over the town youth that he cannot command in his own home. When the reverend's rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren's reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. To the rockin' rhythm of its Oscar-nominated top 40 score (the soundtrack album reached number one on the Billboard charts and has sold over 15 million copies) to which new, dynamic songs have been added, “Footloose” celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind.

Auditions for “Footloose” are Monday, June 30 and Tuesday, July 1 (exact location and time TBA).  Rehearsals begin July 7 and run for five weeks, with performances running August 7-10.  The amount of rehearsal time varies and is largely dependent on the size of the role.
